Maybe Don’t Underestimate Your Colleagues

Sometimes, we're so focused on figuring out how to impress the boss that we forget about our colleagues.

PSA: Your colleagues are not as irrelevant to your career growth as you think.

In fact, I hear they’re the real soap cutters. Sure, your boss might be the one who signs off on your paycheck, but your coworkers play a vital role in your career growth and can be the key to your next big break.

Think about it: If your colleagues don’t ‘‘feel you’’ or see you as someone who can be trusted to handle big projects, they are unlikely to want to work with you or recommend you for promotion. And that's not even touching on the fact that your coworker could be the one who tells you about the next big job opening that could change your life (and your account balance).

Yes, that next big gig you're dreaming of will most likely not come from your boss because they still need you to focus on working for them. Your colleagues, on the other hand, don’t care about that. Chances are, they’re keeping an eye out for better opportunities.

See the whole point is to strike a balance. Yes, impress your boss, but you see that colleague that you’re looking down on - yes that one - they have soap to cut for you!
