Hello, Buddy!
This is an ode to all the overworked and underpaid folks reading this rn.
I know you are tired of working to your bones and yet still get paid peanuts. Some of you are even team leads but your salary keeps leading you astray.
You see, this thing is not about being hardworking. If hard work were to be the only yardstick for wealth, then bricklayers and labourers would be the wealthiest people in town.
I’ve been on maternity leave for a while now and those 3 months of diaper changes and sleepless nights made me realize that the world really waits for no one. Whether you’re succeeding, skilling up, or feeling sorry for yourself, the world will keep moving. Last last, it’s really up to you to decide if you want to be a mechanic or a baller in life.
I came across a post that said, if you’re underpaid at work, it’s due to either one of these 3 things or all of it;
Lack of bargaining power: This typically happens when employers have the upper hand in negotiations because the ratio of applicants to available roles is higher. This gives them free rein to buga and offer lower salaries and longer working hours.
Limited job opportunities: Another reason for being underpaid and overworked is limited job opportunities in a particular field or industry. This is why you must know when to shift base, upskill, or even re-skill. There are some industries that are just tough to grow in either due to organizational structure or bureaucracy.
Low-value skills: I’m sorry to say this to you but your skill might just be obsolete. Wake up and smell the coffee, AI is coming to replace you at work and any job that will pay you for doing that task that can easily be automated is just as obsolete as your skills are. Any workplace that is constantly evolving will always get rid of unnecessary staff.
If you live in Nigeria, I’m sure you know that the current economic climate is not smiling at anyone. See, you have only one life. Make it count. Do the thing now. Get the skills you need to scale up now. Meet the people who can help your career destiny now.
So that when you’re 40+, you’re no longer a hustler but a legacy builder. Remember, the excuse of “I was born into a poor background” stops at 30. Once you are 30, you become the background.
