Networking: The long-leg advantage
I stumbled on this article on Networking and I couldn't agree less with the author. She points out that "According to LinkedIn, 70% of people in 2016 landed a job at a company where they had a connection, AND, 85% of jobs are gotten through networking according to a survey by Harvard Business Review".
CVs and interviews are still valid for securing jobs and opportunities, but Networking remains one potent tool you don't want to sleep on. Trust me.
On one end, there's the argument of networking being biased. There are a lot of people out there who deserve that same opportunity, so why do you have to get it on a platter of familiarity?
But here’s the truth: people who get jobs through networking didn't hug, selfie, or let-me-buy-you-lunch their way through to that opportunity. They pitched and proved their competence too, and that earned them a priority spot on the recruiter/employer's mind.
The recruitment process is hard already. You could make it easier for hiring managers, and ultimately for yourself by harnessing this thing called networking. Yes, it could be quite difficult, especially for introverts, but there are ways to go about it.
